American Conference Showdown
No. 25 Rice returns to Holloway Field Sunday morning to take on No. 11 Memphis in a battle of conference leaders. This marks the first ranked match between American Conference opponents since the 2021 spring season.
Last Time Out
The 25th-ranked Rice soccer team pushed their unbeaten streak to seven games after a 1-0 win over Temple on a rainy Thursday night in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Naija Bruckner netted the lone goal in the 57th minute off a corner kick from Leah Chancey.
In the Rankings
Rice remained at 25 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll. Rice entered the poll for the first time since 2021 for the week of Sept. 16, entering at 25. The Owls are one of two schools in the American Conference to be ranked (Memphis – 11). Rice also debuted at 40 in the initial RPI of the season, the highest initial RPI ranking in program history.
Chancey's Chances
Leah Chancey has continued her offensive production for the 2025 season, already netting eight goals with seven assists. She currently ranks first in the American in nine major offensive categories: assists per game, game winning goals, goals per game, points per game, shot accuracy, shots on goal per game and total assists, total goals and total points. Chancey ranks first in the NCAA in total points and points per game.
Rice vs. Memphis
This is the 14th meeting between the two schools, with the Tigers holding a 10-2-1 series lead. The Owls have dropped six consecutive games to Memphis, with the most recent being a 3-1 defeat in the American Conference semifinal game last year.
Weekly Honors
Rice grabbed two more weekly honors with Leah Chancey being named the American Offensive Player of the Week and Jadyn Jaeger being named the American Freshman of the Week. Chancey scored the game-winning goal against Florida Atlantic and dropped one goal and two assists in a 3-1 win over Grambling. She has scored a goal in six consecutive matches and has entered the Rice top 10 all-time lists for goals and points scored in 29 matches played at Rice. Jaeger helped guide the Rice offense to a 2-0 week, recording an assist against Florida Atlantic and netting the game-winning goal against Grambling State.
Lee Earns Win 350
During Rice's 3-2 win over Oklahoma State on August 28, head coach Brian Lee recorded with 350th career win as a head coach. Coach Lee has been a head coach for 32 seasons with stops at Furman (11 seasons) and LSU (14 seasons) before taking over Rice in 2019 (7th season). Lee currently ranks 18th in wins by active DI coaches.
HTX Takeover in the RGV
The Owls had an offensive explosion at UTRGV, dropping six goals in the shutout win. The Owls' six goals are the most in a game since scoring eight against TSU during the 2020-21 season. The six goals are the most scored on the road since Rice had seven at Old Dominion in 2017.
Two Up, Two Down
Mariana Elizondo has opened the 2025 season on fire; netting goals in back-to-back matches, both being game-winning goals. The two goals tie a season high, when she scored twice back in the 2022 season (also the last time she scored before the 2025 campaign).
Take a Chance(y) On Me
Chancey checked into the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 list to open the 2025 season at No. 67. Last season, Chancey led the conference in goals (nine), points (22), shot accuracy (.528), shots on goal per game (1.40), and was second in game-winning goals (4), third in goal per game (.45), and fourth in points per game (1.10). She had a Rice record-breaking and NCAA-leading eight consecutive matches with a goal in 2024 and to no surprise, scored the Owls' opening goal of the 2025 season.

The Owls defended Holloway Field fiercely last season, going 10-1-1 at home. The Owls have a 145-59-23 all-time home record. Rice currently has a 10-game unbeaten streak at home against non-conference opponents, going 9-0-1 in that span.
Dash Legend to South Main
Legendary Houston Dash goalkeeper and Olympic bronze medalist Jane Campbell is set to join the Rice soccer staff ahead of the 2025 season as a volunteer coach. Regarded as one of the greatest keepers in the NWSL, Campbell has appeared in over 150 games with the Houston Dash. She has also been part of the United States National Team, making the Olympic team in 2020 and serving as an alternate in 2024. She was voted as the 2023 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
