Owls Fall Late to Texas A&M

HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team dropped their season opening game to Texas A&M 2-1 Wednesday night at Holloway Field, after a late penalty kick gave the Aggies the lead in the final 10 minutes of the match.
How It Happened
The Owls had chances early, with Lauren Pickup firing a shot that just got saved off the keeper's hand and crossbar to keep things scoreless. Shortly after, A&M struck for the first goal of the match just shy of the 19-minute mark. Jordyn Mariam had a counter minutes later, but the Aggie keeper was there for the save. A&M led 1-0 at the half.
Rice rattled off several shots to open the second half from Sloane Popov, Valentina Labuschagne, Jadyn Jaeger and Neerali Kapadia, but Texas A&M's defense held. It wasn't until a free kick at the 60-minute mark allowed Jaeger to send a ball to the head of Ava Landstra, which found the head of Pickup for the equalizing goal. After withstanding another round of attacks from Rice, A&M was awarded a penalty kick with under 11 minutes remaining, resulting in the game-winning goal.
