LAKEWOOD RANCH – The sixth-seeded Rice soccer team avenged last week's loss with a 1-0 shutout win over three-seed Tulsa Monday afternoon in the American Tournament Quarterfinals. The Owls secure their tenth win of the season and sit at 10-3-5 (3-2-5 American).
How It Happened
The Rice offense had opportunities early, with Piper Biziorek and Leah Chancey both seeing their shots saved in the opening parts of the game. At the 22-minute mark, Eileen Albers rattled off back-to-back shots, but once again the Tulsa defense held. Both sides went into halftime scoreless.
A furry of shots by the Golden Hurricane opened the second half, with the Rice defense holding strong. An Owls' free kick just shy of the 59-minute mark set up the American Freshman of the Year, Jadyn Jaeger, who launched the ball to the box, where Albers sent the ball to the back of the net off a header to score the game's lone goal. Kirsten Ruf made timely save after timely save the rest of the way as the Owls advanced to the semifinals on Thursday.
