Owls Advance to American Championship Game on Penalty Kicks

LAKEWOOD RANCH – The sixth-seeded Rice soccer team is headed to the American Tournament championship game following a 0-0 draw with seventh-seed South Florida Thursday night in the semifinals. The Owls (10-3-6) advanced 6-5 on penalty kicks.
How It Happened
The Owl defense was tested early, with Kirsten Ruf making several saves in the opening parts of the match. Eileen Albers and Leah Chancey tried getting the Rice offense going, but the Bull defense held. Rice and South Florida went into the half scoreless.
Olivia Duvall had a chance for the opening goal, but the South Florida keeper was there for the save. Camille Quarterman later had another chance with 20 minutes left, but her shot went right into the keeper's arms. USF had a one-on-one chance with 10 to go, but Ruf made a leaping save to keep things scoreless. The defenses held the final minutes and sent the match into overtime.
After a lack of offense in the first overtime, both sides rattled off shots in the second overtime with the two keepers holding strong. USF had the final chance to win the match, but Ruf made yet another save as the match went to penalty kicks.
After Rice's first kick was saved, USF went up early with a made PK. Piper Biziorek got Rice on the board as the Bulls missed their next kick to even the score. The next four kicks by both sides were good, with Sophie Zhang, Chancey, Lilly Reuscher and Duvall converting for Rice. After Jordyn Mariam's conversion in the seventh round, South Florida missed the following kick as the Owls advanced to the finals.
