
No. 25 Rice Falls to No. 11 Memphis in Battle of Ranked Opponents

HOUSTON – The 25th ranked Rice soccer team had their seven-match unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of No. 11 Memphis 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Owls fall 8-2-1 (2-1-1 American) while the Tigers improve to 9-0-2 (3-0-1 American).
How It Happened
Memphis was on the attack early, rattling off several shots in the opening minutes. The Tigers netted the game's first goal near the 20-minute mark. Jules Johnston tried to even the match several minutes later, but her shot was scooped up by the Tiger goalie. Lauren Pickup had a great chance in the final minutes of the half, but a leaping save by the keeper kept Rice off the board and down 1-0 at the half.
Naija Brucker tried to get the offense clicking out of the half, but once again the defense held. Memphis doubled its lead in the 58th minute. The Tiger defense held off Rice the rest of the way for the 2-0 victory.
