HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team settled for a hard-fought 1-1 draw against AAC East Division leader South Florida Thursday night at Holloway Field. Both teams scored their lone goals in the 31st minute of the game.
How It Happened
Rice tried to apply pressure early, with Ellen Halseth rattling off a shot in the game's opening minute, but Leire Herraez Gallach was there to make a point-blank save from the left side of the box. South Florida came back with their own chance, but Hannah Pimentel was there to record the save. The Owls struck first after Sarah Piper converted a penalty kick to give Rice a 1-0 lead at the 30:20 mark. South Florida answered right back 30 seconds later to tie the game 1-1. Both sides remained even at 1-1 at halftime.
The Bulls tried to take the lead early, but a leaping Pimentel kept the game tied to open the second half. South Florida continued to apply pressure with back-to-back shots on goal but once again, Pimentel was there to make the saves and keep the game knotted at 1-1.
