HOUSTON – After both defenses held strong nearly the entire match, a Florida Atlantic goal with 13 minutes remaining was enough to lift the visiting Owls past Rice 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field.
How It Happened
After fending off several Florida Atlantic offensive chances, Sarah Piper fired a shot in the 17th minute from the top of the box that sailed just over the bar, keeping things scoreless early on. FAU had an opportunity to go into the half up one, but a shot from Simo Rivard-Roberts fell just wide left of the goal as FAU and Rice went into halftime scoreless.
Sophie Zhang opened the second half with a shot, but the FAU keeper was there to keep the match scoreless. Florida Atlantic had several offensive attacks just past the 50th minute, but Hannah Pimentel was there to keep FAU off the board. Ellen Halseth had another chance for Rice at the 65:43 mark, but her shot went off the top of the crossbar. FAU broke the scoreless tie at the 77:01 mark, taking a 1-0 lead. Kallie McKinney had a chance to tie the game with seven minutes remaining, but her shot went off the left post as FAU went on to win 1-0.
