HOUSTON – After entering halftime scoreless, two early second-half goals gave UTSA a 2-0 victory over the Rice Owls Thursday night at Holloway Field. Rice honored its senior class before the game: Catarina Albuquerque, Mikala Furuto, Natalie Gorji, Ellen Halseth, Hannah Pimentel and Sarah Piper. The Owls also honored team manager Chloe Kinnebrew.
How It Happened
The Roadrunners tried to get the offense rolling early, but Pimentel was there to scoop a shot from Marlee Fray in the opening minutes. Halseth countered with an opportunity for Rice, but the goal-keeping play continued to keep the game scoreless through the opening 25 minutes. Carsyn Martz looked to put Rice on the board at the 31:01 mark, but once again, Jasmine Kessler was there to make the stop as both sides went into halftime scoreless.
After fending off several shots from UTSA to open the second half, Sasjah Dade broke the scoreless tie in the 54th minute after finding open space on a rebounded shot. Six minutes later the Roadrunners doubled their score with 30 minutes left to play. Halseth tried to respond with a one-on-one chance, but Kessler was in the right spot to grab the save. Furuto had a look to get the Owls on the board off a free kick, but her header sailed high with 12 minutes remaining as the Roadrunner held on for a 2-0 victory.
Quick Hits
The Roadrunners out-shot Rice 14-8 and 10-4 in shots on goal.
UTSA also had an 6-5 corner kick advantage.
With the loss, Rice is now 12-3 all-time against UTSA.
