HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team rallied twice to ultimately play to a draw against Louisiana Thursday night at Holloway Field. The Owls move to 5-1-1 on the season, remaining unbeaten at home (5-0-1), while the Ragin' Cajuns move to 4-0-3.
How It Happened
Louisiana started hot out of the gates, quickly taking the lead just six minutes into the match. Minutes later the Ragin' Cajuns looked to double their lead, but Faith Hutchins was there to make the save and reset the defense. It wasn't until the 35th minute before the Owls had a true offensive chance, with Leah Chancey sending a free kick off the tip of the Louisiana goalie's gloves and to the back of the net to tie the match. The score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Just like they did in the opening half, the Ragin' Cajuns opened the second half with an early score, this time just over four minutes into the half. Rice found the response 10 minutes later, with quick footwork from Mikala Furuto and Kallie McKinney finding Jules Johnston, who sailed the ball from the top of the box and to the top left corner of the goal to tie the match back up. Both sides made timely saves to keep the match even, resulting in the 2-2 draw.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stand a little taller,' – tonight was necessary in the course of our season. Louisiana exposed our slow start and left us chasing the game. We showed great character to fight back twice and have clear areas to get better."
