HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team closed the non-conference schedule with a 1-0 shutout win over Sam Houston Sunday night. The Owls (6-1-1) extend their unbeaten streak to five, while Sam Houston falls to 2-3-2 on the season.
How It Happened
The Owls wasted no time on the offense, with passes by Jules Johnston and Allie Love finding Leah Chancey, who launched the ball into the back of the net to give Rice an early lead just under five minutes into the match. Kat Lazor later had a chance to extend the lead, but her shot sailed right into the arms of the Bearkat keeper. Rice led 1-0 at the half.
After trading possession for the opening minutes of the second half, the Bearkats had a chance to tie the match in the 60th minute off a Rice mishap, but Faith Hutchins was there to make the point-blank save and keep the lead intact. Camille Quarterman had a golden opportunity with a one-on-one shot with the goalie in the 67th minute, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar. The Owls looked to have doubled up their lead seconds later, but offside was called on Rice to wipe off the goal. Rice's defense held the rest of the way, as the Owls rounded out the non-conference slate with the 1-0 victory.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Lots of individually good performances tonight, highlighted by another goal created from the combo of Jules and Allie. They are developing a great chemistry. Some things just go better together and probably always will. Like a cup of coffee and a sunrise, Sunday drives and time to kill."
