HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team used a second-half goal from Leah Chancey and stellar defense from Faith Hutchins to shutout Tulsa 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference opener Thursday night at Holloway Field. The Owls move to 7-1-1 (1-0 AAC) and extend the team's unbeaten streak to six matches while Tulsa falls to 4-3-2 (0-1 AAC).
How It Happened
The Owls' offense applied pressure early, with Jules Johnston and Allie Love both firing shots to the goal, but the Tulsa keeper was there to make the saves. Rice had another great look off a corner kick just after the 20-minute mark, but Dayo Tennyson's shot and rebound shot were both saved in front of the goal. The two sides went into the half scoreless.
After a pass from Catarina Albuquerque found Carsyn Martz in the attacking zone, Martz lobbed a ball out to the box, where Leah Chancey headed the ball over the goalkeeper and to the back of the net to give Rice the lead in the 59th minute. Tulsa looked to even the score soon after, but Hutchins was there to make the saves. The Rice defense held strong the rest of the way as the Owls opened AAC play with the 1-0 win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"We played very well and with a great mental attitude to keep creating chances. Nobody wins afraid of losing and the hard roads are the ones worth choosing. Some day we'll look back and smile and know it was worth every mile."
