TAMPA – The Rice soccer team grabbed an early lead, but back-to-back South Florida goals gave the Bulls a 2-1 win Thursday night at Corbett Stadium. The Owls see their six-match unbeaten streak end, falling to 7-2-1 (1-1 AAC), while South Florida moves to 6-1-2 (1-0-1 AAC).
How It Happened
The Rice offense was firing out of the gates, with Leah Chancey connecting off of a blocked shot, sending the ball to the back of the net, to extend her goal-scoring streak to five matches. The Bulls found an answer shortly after, tying the match minutes later. South Florida struck again in the 15th minute to take a 2-1 lead. The defenses settled in for the rest of the half, with the Bulls holding their 2-1 lead at the break.
The Bulls looked to extend their lead early in the second half, with Faith Hutchins making the save to keep it a one-goal game. Kallie McKinney looked to tie the match in the 59th minute, but her shot found the arms of the South Florida keeper. The Owls had one final offensive chance in the closing seconds off a corner kick, but the South Florida defense held on to take the 2-1 win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Not our best today. We will take the rearview off so we can only see in front of us and get ready for UAB next Thursday."
