HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team used two first-half goals to keep their home unbeaten streak intact, defeating UAB 2-1 Thursday night at Holloway Field. With the win, Rice moves to 8-2-1 (2-1 AAC) on the season, remaining unbeaten at home (8-0-1), while UAB falls to 4-3-2 (1-1-1 AAC).
How It Happened
Both offenses were slow to get rolling, with the first shot of the match coming just past the 25-minute mark from Allie Love. Three minutes later, the Owls broke through, with Leah Chancey connecting on her seventh goal of the season off passes from Camille Quarterman and Taylor Rish. It wasn't long before Rice found the back of the net once again, with Quarterman finding Rish to double up the Owls' lead 2-0 in the 38th minute. Rice held the 2-0 lead at the half.
UAB quickly found a groove to open the second half, with the Blazers rattling off a shot in the opening minute, but Faith Hutchins was there to make the save. The Owls had several chances over the next couple of minutes, but the UAB defense held. The Blazers later capitalized on a breakaway chance to cut the deficit in half in the 77th minute. Rice was able to hold on the rest of the way, with the defense making key stops to take the 2-1 win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"For long spells, we played the best attacking soccer of the year and scored two great goals. If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a forward in the band. Tonight that forward was Taylor Rish."
