SAN ANTONIO – The Rice soccer team used Leah Chancey's eighth goal of the season to take down UTSA on the road in shutout fashion, 1-0 at Park West Athletics Complex Sunday afternoon. Chancey's game-winner marked her seventh consecutive match with a goal, tying Lauren Hughes' program record set in 2014. With the win, Rice is now 9-2-1 (3-1 AAC), while UTSA falls to 6-5-1 (1-3 AAC).
How It Happened
After Chancey was able to rattle off a shot in the opening minutes, both offenses went quiet until UTSA had its first shot in the 17th minute. A few minutes later, the Roadrunners looked to take the lead, but Faith Hutchins made the save to keep things scoreless. Both sides went into halftime still scoreless.
The offenses came out firing in the second half, with Camille Quarterman countering a shot by a Roadrunner, but both goalkeepers were able to make the saves. Mikala Furuto sent the ball in just shy of the 50-minute mark, but once again, the UTSA defense made the stop. Chancey snapped the scoreless tie in the 58th minute, sending a rocket shot into the back of the net off a pass from Quarterman. The Rice defense continued to hold it down the rest of the way, en route to the fifth shutout of the season as the Owls won 1-0.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Today was a great team effort against a tough team on the road. I don't believe in superstars, organic food and foreign cars. I don't believe the price of gold, the certainty of growing old. That right is right and left is wrong, that North and South can't get along, That East is East and West is West, and being first is always best. But I believe in this team."
