HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team saw a historic night at Holloway Field, with Leah Chancey breaking the Rice record for consecutive matches with a goal, powering Rice to a 4-0 victory over Temple Thursday night. Rice claims its 10th win of the season, moving to 10-2-1 (4-1 AAC), while Temple falls to 2-11 (0-4 AAC).
How It Happened
Rice wasted no time putting pressure on the Temple defense, rattling off shot after shot in the opening 15 minutes, but the Temple defense was able to hold to keep the home Owls off the board. Rice broke through in the 33rd minute with Catarina Albuquerque finding the back of the net off passes from Sophie Zhang and Camille Quarterman. Rice held on for the 1-0 lead at the half.
Leah Chancey made history six minutes into the second half, getting left alone on the back line to sink the one-on-one look with the Temple keeper, doubling Rice's lead. Rice tacked on another in the 67th minute after Kallie McKinney stole a pass on a free kick to extend the lead for the home Owls. Temple looked to cut into the deficit a minute later, but Faith Hutchins made the save to keep the shutout intact. Jessica Molina found her first career goal in a footrace with the Temple defense to put Rice up four, where the score remained the same, with Rice taking the 4-0 win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"It was another excellent performance at home. We love playing at Holloway more than the feeling when the bass hits the hook, when the guy gets the girl at the end of the book."
