HOUSTON – Trailing out of the half, Leah Chancey sent two beautiful set pieces in the box finding Taylor Rish and Catarina Albuquerque as the Owls rallied to defeat North Texas 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field. Rice secured its fourth consecutive win to move to 11-2-1 (5-1 AAC), while North Texas falls to 7-4-3 (3-2-1 AAC).
How It Happened
The Owls made moves early on offense, with Sophie Zhang sending a shot right into the Mean Green keeper's arms in the opening minutes. North Texas capitalized off of a Rice miscue to net the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. Another opportunity came minutes later for the Mean Green, but Faith Hutchins made the save to keep the deficit at one. North Texas held on to the 1-0 lead at the half.
After a foul gave Rice a free kick at the left side of the box, Chancey sent a strike into Taylor Rish who snuck the ball into the back of the net to tie the match. It wasn't until the 76-minute mark when Chancey had another chance, this time by a corner kick, which found Albuquerque who headed the ball home and put the Owls in front. Hutchins and crew held strong the rest of the match, as Rice went on to win 2-1.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Another great team Holloway performance to turn the game at halftime. It's a little story, I'd like to tell, about three 5th years you know so well, it started way back in history with CatA, TRish, and Leah Chancey. Two great finishes by Taylor and Cat from phenomenal services by Leah and certainly our depth was the difference on a hot day."
