GREENVILLE – Rice soccer head coach Brian Lee is set to be inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024, Friday night in Greenville, S.C. A former student-athlete and coach at Furman, Lee's time with the Paladins was surrounded by success, claiming numerous conference titles between his years as an athlete and coach.
The architect behind one of Furman's most successful programs in school history, Lee became the inaugural head coach for the Paladins' women's soccer team in 1994. During his 11-year stint at Furman, the Paladins claimed six Southern Conference regular season titles (1995, '99, 00, '01, '02, 03), three SoCon Tournament championships (1999, '02, '04) and made four NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, '00, '02, '04). Lee was also named SoCon Coach of the Year five times (1995, '98, '99, '00, '02).
Lee posted a 144-80-10 (.637) record with the Paladins, including an astonishing 76-16-3 (.816) conference mark. His 144 wins ranks third all-time in SoCon history. His Paladins earned back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1999 and 2000, the only two 20-win seasons in program history. The 1999 season was also the only time Furman received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and the only time Furman has hosted an NCAA Tournament game.
His athletes have earned numerous conference accolades, including 57 All-SoCon selections, five SoCon Freshman of the Year awards, four SoCon Player of the Year honorees, three SoCon Tournament MVP's, and a SoCon Female Athlete of the Year. Lee also had two All-Americans and three Academic All-Americans.
Lee's four years as a student-athlete from 1989-92 saw just as much success as his coaching years, claiming three SoCon regular-season titles and two SoCon Tournament titles. Appearing in 65 games (57 starts), Lee scored four goals and seven assists and helped guide the Paladins to their first-ever NCAA Tournament, making the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1991.
The Furman Hall of Fame ceremony will take place tonight, Friday, Sept. 13, at 'the L' in Greenville, S.C.
