Second-Half Offense Powers Rice to Season-Opening Win

HOUSTON – The Rice soccer team opened the 2024 season in style, defeating Texas State 2-1 Thursday night at Holloway Field.
How It Happened
Rice applied pressure early, with Natalie Gorji and Mikala Furuto rattling off shots in the opening minutes. Halfway through the opening half, Taylor Rish had a look from above the box, but the Bobcat keeper was there to make the save. Both sides went into halftime scoreless.
The Owls struck first in the 59th minute after freshman Dayo Tennyson knotted the first Rice goal of the season off a corner kick from Leah Chancey to give the Owls the lead. Eight minutes later, the Owls capitalized on an own-goal from a shot by Carsyn Martz to double up the score 2-0. The Bobcats searched for life in the 74th minute off a corner kick, but Faith Hutchins made a point-blank save off a header by Mady Soumare. Texas State cut the deficit in half with 70 seconds remaining, but the Owls closed out the match to secure the season-opening victory.
