No. 20 Rice Falls in Overtime Thriller at Penn, 2-1
9/19/2021 6:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Philadelphia, Pa. — Jackie Bruder scored in the 96th minute to spoil a Rice comeback and hand the 20th-ranked Owls just their second defeat of the season, 2-1, in their non-conference finale Sunday afternoon from Rhodes Field.
The Details
Penn put the Owls in an early hole when, in the second minute, Jenae Stewart went down the right side and fired a shot into the top left corner for the early lead. Vyviene Spaulding almost tied it a minute later, but her shot went just past the left post. Bella Killgore kept it a one-goal game, making a diving stop in the seventh minute. Rice then began to turn up the pressure. In the 19th minute, Caleigh Boeckx had two excellent chances to tie the match. But Penn goalkeeper Laurence Gladu came up with two huge saves to keep the Owls off the board. The Owls again had a chance to tie the game in the 32nd minute, but Gladu made a diving stop on Delaney Schultz's header towards the left corner and Rice went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Rice had a great chance to start the second half when Schultz turned into the middle of the field and sent a shot toward the left corner. But Gladu again made a diving stop. Penn had three chances to take a two-goal lead late in the match, but all three times they sent the ball just over the net. Rice was finally able to break through in the 85th minute. Following Mijke Roelfsema's corner kick, there was wild scrum in front of the net when Schultz was able to poke the ball past the goalkeeper, tying the game and sending it to overtime. However in the 96th minute, Bruder corralled the ball and got in alone, sending a shot toward the left corner. Killgore was able to get a hand on it, but not enough to stop it from going into the net, giving the Quakers the victory.
