THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team continues the current homestand with two games this week at Holloway Field. The Owls host crosstown foe Texas Southern on a new date - Thursday (Sept. 19) at 7 pm. Rice then opens Conference USA action on Sunday (Sept. 22) with a league match against rival Charlotte. Note there is new 12:30 pm start time for Sunday's contest vs. the 49ers.
FUN & GAMES AT HOLLOWAY FIELD: Wednesday's game against TSU is Rice's annual Youth Soccer Night. There's special discounted admission for all kids who show up in their soccer uniforms. After Sunday's game vs. Charlotte the Owls will sign autographs and take photos with fans.
QUICK ON THE OWLS (3-4-0): Rice has been battling through a challenging schedule. The Owls won the season opener on the road at Oral Roberts 2-1 (Aug. 22) before posting a convincing 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Houston (Aug. 25). On Aug. 29 SEC power Alabama scored a late goal to slip past the Blue & Gray 2-1. Rice recently split tournament matches in San Antonio, claiming a victory over Cleveland State and a loss vs. red hot South Florida. Last Thursday the Owls lost on the road at SMU. On Sunday (Sept. 15) Rice dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to undefeated Pac-12 power Oregon State in overtime. In 2019 the Rice soccer team returns seven of 11 starters from last season's squad that went 7-9-1 and advanced to the C-USA Tournament. The Owls return a total of 18 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's games with a career record of 290-192-55. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program.
SERIES HISTORY VS. TSU: The Owls and Texas Southern Tigers are crosstown foes. Rice leads the all-time soccer series 3-0 after meeting for the first time in 2004. Wednesday's contest marks the first match between the teams since 2006.
SERIES HISTORY VS. CHARLOTTE: Rice leads the series with Charlotte 5-1-0. The most-recent clash was a 2-1 Owl victory in North Carolina in the finale of the 2018 regular season. That must-win game clinched Rice's spot in the C-USA Tournament the following week in Norfolk. The 49ers are making their first trip to Houston since the 2016 season.
HAIL SENIORS!: A total of five Rice players have scored all ten of the team's goals – and four of them have been seniors. Owl veterans Haley Kostyshyn, Louise Stephens, Lianne Mananquil and Erin Mikeska have led the Blue & Gray to the back of the opposing net (with Kostyshyn and Stephens scoring three times and Mikeska scoring twice).
NEXT WEEK: After hosting Charlotte Rice is back out on the road the following week to continue league play. The Owls play at Middle Tennessee on Sept. 26 at 7 pm. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Rice then returns to San Antonio to face the UTSA Roadrunners on Sept. 29 (Sunday) at 1 pm.
