THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team opens defense of its Conference USA regular season championship with a pair of home league matches on Thursday and Sunday (Sept. 20 & 23). The Owls first welcome Middle Tennessee to Holloway Field on Thursday for a 7 pm start. The Blue & Gray host state foe UTSA on Sunday at 6 pm. Watch online and get live stats at the above links.
FUN & GAMES!: There's always a lot of activities and promotions for Owl fans at home soccer games. Thursday's match vs. Middle Tennessee is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night where all Rice faculty and staff may receive up to three complimentary tickets. The game has also been designated as Rice Residential College Night, so let the Owls know which is the loudest! The Rice Soccer program is proud that Sunday's match vs. UTSA has been designated as Hometown Heroes Night – all first responders, active duty military members and veterans can receive one complimentary ticket. Contact the Rice Athletics Ticket Office at 713-348-OWLS (6957), or at the above link, for more details.
LAST WEEK: Rice was originally scheduled to open C-USA action last weekend (Sept. 16) against Charlotte on the road in North Carolina. That Sunday match was postponed due to Hurricane Florence. The rescheduling of the league game, and any other matches, will be announced at a later time.
QUICK ON THE 2018 OWLS (2-4-0): The 2018 Rice soccer team returns eight of 11 starters from last season's squad that went 12-4-2 and won the Conference USA regular season championship with a 9-0-1 league record. The Owls return a total of 19 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Nicky Adams, who is now in her eighth full year at the helm of the program. Adams enters the week with a career record of 82-50-22. A former pro player and All-America honoree while playing at Texas A&M, Adams was inducted into her alma mater's Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2015. Adams' coaching staff includes Brenton Saylor in his third year with the program, Kelly Madsen her first year, and volunteer coach Javier Jerez in his first season.
THE RICE-MIDDLE TENNESSEE SERIES: The Owls lead the four-game series with Middle Tennessee 2-1-1. A year ago Rice defeated the Blue Raiders at Holloway Field 4-2. The teams met for the first time in 2015 and ended up playing twice that year. In the 2015 season the squads tied 0-0 in Houston before the Middle Tennessee claimed a 1-0 win in the opening round of the conference tournament a few weeks later. The Owls also posted a 2-1 road win in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 2016.
THE RICE-UTSA SERIES: Rice leads the all-time series with UTSA 7-1-0. The Owls are 4-0 vs. the Roadrunners when playing in Houston. Due to some odd quirks in the scheduling, Sunday's match is the second-straight time for UTSA to visit Rice in as many years.
PREVIOUS OUTING: HOUSTON — The Rice senior duo of Annie Walker and Dominique Mazero both scored first half goals, and true freshman goalkeeper Bella Killgore posted four saves, to pace the Owls soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Tulsa Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field (Sept. 9)… Rice improved to 2-4-0 on the season while Tulsa is now 3-3-1 overall. The start of the contest was delayed by more than two hours due to weather conditions in the Houston area… The Owls held a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 7-6 margin in corner kicks. The Rice goals were both the first of the year for the two seniors. Walker led all players with four shots, including three on-goal.
DID YOU KNOW?: One year ago hurricane Harvey forced the cancellation of two Rice soccer games. In 2008 it was hurricane Ike that canceled one Owl soccer game and postponed another.
