HOUSTON -- Rice junior goalkeeper Meghan Erkel posted a school record 16 saves, but TCU scored two goals in the second half to claim a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Owls' soccer team Sunday evening on the Rice campus.
Rice jumped out to an early lead in the contest. In the game's third minute, junior midfielder Kate Edwards served a long lob down the left side and found a sprinting Korey Taylor with one defender to beat. Taylor, who moved to forward and scored the Owls' season-opening win two days ago at Stephen F. Austin, made a cut to the center of the field to get open. The standout from McKinney was able to to blast away on a shot in front of the goal from inside the 18 and found the back of the net. The goal was her second of the year and gave the Blue & Gray a 1-0 advantage.
As one of the top-ranked teams in the region, TCU continued to apply the offensive pressure with seven shots on-goal in the first half. Erkel made stops on each and then added another nine in the second period. Her 16 saves broke the previous school record of 13 set on two occasions by Amanda Garrison, in the program's debut season of 2001 and equaled a year later in 2002.
TCU tied the game in the 79th minute on a goal by Lizzy Karoly after a pass by Jordan Calhoun. The Horned Frogs moved in front on a score by Kaylie Garcia in the 84th minute after being awarded a corner kick. Garcia took two consecutive shots, with Erkel blocking the first, but alertly playing the carom and scoring with the follow-up.
Rice had two final shots on-goal to start and close the 88th minute. The first attempt was by senior Shelley Wong and the second was freshman Megan Aultman. Rice head coach Chris Huston focused on the positives.
"We worked hard and had some positive efforts we can build on, but we have to be able to learn to protect a lead against a good team," Huston said. "Every opponent on the schedule gets a little better and better each time so our work-rate has to be high. It has to be high and we have to sustain it for 90 minutes."
With the loss Rice slipped to 1-3-1 on the season. The Owls next play at home on Friday, Sept. 11, against nationally-ranked Oklahoma State. Game time is set for 7 pm at the Rice soccer stadium.
