TULSA, Okla. -- The Rice soccer team battled longtime rival Tulsa into overtime on the road in Oklahoma, but the Golden Hurricane scored in the game's 94th minute to claim a 1-0 Conference USA home win Sunday afternoon.
Tulsa forward Jennifer Kacergis hit a close-range shot to the back of the Rice net after a pass from Hannah Taylor. The goal was Kacergis' fourth of the season.
The teams were even in attempted shots early in the contest (3-3), but the Owls created offensive opportunities to hold a 4-0 lead in corner kicks in the first half and a 7-5 advantage for the game. Rice senior Shelley Wong led the team with three shots, and was one of three Owls to have attempts on-goal. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Erkel made three saves in the game and she, and Owl senior Katelyn Ostendorf, played all 94 minutes of the contest.
Rice is now 2-8-2 on the season. The team has dutifully completed its stretch of four-straight conference road games to open up the C-USA regular season. The Blue & Gray is 0-4-0 in the league with its fourth-straight loss. All four C-USA games have been by identical 1-0 margins. Seven of the Owls' eight defeats have been by that same 1-0 score. Tulsa improved to 5-5-2 on the season and 2-2-0 in conference.
With the rugged road-swing complete, the Owls are home for their next four. Rice returns home to host league rival UAB on Oct. 9 (Friday) at 7pm. Rice then hosts defending C-USA regular season co-champion Memphis on Oct. 11 at 1 pm. The Memphis game will be taped for a television broadcast by CBS College Sports.
