2020: Second on the team in hitting (.328, 19-of-58) when the season came to an early end… Led the Owls in doubles (7), runs (9) and RBI (8)… Also led the team, and ranked among the Conference USA leaders in walks (18) for a team-best .487 on-base percentage… Improved discipline at the plate helped amass 18 walks in 16 games played (an average of 1.13 walks per game that would still project to fall just a bit short of his father’s personal high of 76 walks in the 1995 season)… Recorded more walks than strikeouts… Recorded six multi-hit games, including four hits against crosstown rival Houston to tie his career-high… Two of his four hits that day against the Cougars were doubles to give him a season-high six total bases… Hit safely in six-straight games, and also managed to reach base in nine-straight, when the season came to an end… Blasted a home run for a three-RBI day against Missouri State… Drove in two-plus runs in a game three times… Batted a steady .320 with runners on base, .333 with the bases empty and .316 when leading off an inning… Played just one position (shortstop) where he rarely took a breather, accounting for 137 of the Owls 139 defensive innings in the field (98.6 percent)… Made just three errors in the field in 67 total chances (.955)… Turned or started 12 of the team’s 16 double plays.

2019: All-Conference USA (second team); Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week (Feb. 18); C-USA Hitter of the Week (Feb. 18); Played in 58 of the team’s 59 games, and started every game in which he played… One of only three Owls to start 58 games… Played at a new position in 2019 (shortstop), the only defensive spot he played in 520.1 innings on the field… Usually batted third in the order (40 times), and was never lower than third… Batted leadoff 16 times and was second in the lineup on two occasions… Tied for 15th in the nation among the NCAA statistical leaders (and was second in Conference USA) with six triples, the eighth-highest single season total in school history and the most by any Owl in the last decade… Led the team, and ranked among the C-USA leaders, with 121 total bases (tied for sixth in the league) and 50 runs scored (tenth in conference)... Also placed among the C-USA leaders in at bats (sixth), total plate appearances (seventh) and home runs (eleventh)… Shared the team lead with six steals… Finished second on the squad in batting average (.305), hits (71), home runs (9), RBI (44), slugging (.519), walks (35) and on-base percentage (.393)... Helped lift the team into qualifying for the C-USA Tournament by batting .325 in the second half of the season, including a .330 average in league-only games... Alertly made two of the three put outs on Rice’s April 28 triple play.
2018: Freshman All-America Team (Collegiate Baseball)… Conference USA All-Freshman Team; Delivered a solid debut season of Division I baseball… Started 58 games, all at second base… Led the team and finished tied for sixth in C-USA with 40 walks, the highest single-season total by a Rice player in five years… Shared the team lead, and tied for 11th in the league, with 45 RBI… Tallied two or more RBI in a game a team-high 12 times, and was one of just two Owls with a five-RBI game (vs. Columbia)… High RBI totals are a function of hitting .315 with runners on base and .328 with men in scoring position… Recorded the second-most bases-loaded at bats on the team (10) and registered four hits (.400) in those situations… Batted second in the lineup 22 times, and was also third or fourth in the order a combined 24 times… Collected two or more hits in a game 19 times, with a career-best three hits three times (Southern Miss, Charlotte and Sam Houston State)… Longest hitting streak was eight games… Reached base in 15-straight games during one stretch… Blasted home runs against Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, UTSA, Gonzaga, Lamar and Houston Baptist… ‘Night Owl’ who maintained a .306 batting average after dark… Turned or started 35 of the team’s 46 double plays, and made the key pivot on Rice’s 5-4-3 triple play at the C-USA Tournament… Registered a career-high seven defensive put outs on the road against crosstown rival Houston… Had a career-best seven assists vs. ACC power Virginia.
Selected in the 33rd round of the 2017 Major League Draft by the hometown Houston Astros... Played summer ball in the California Collegiate League (PUF Capitalists) prior to the start of fall classes at Rice... Batted .322 with 39 hits, 37 runs scored and 19 stolen bases playing in 35 CCL games... Highly honored switch-hitting prep standout from nearby Episcopal High School... Named to the Preseason All-Greater Houston team, a PerfectGame Honorable Mention All-America, first team All-Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC), and to the league's all-tournament team... Helped lead the Knights to a 24-9 record and SPC title as a senior in 2017... Batted .460 with 30 RBI and 22 stolen bases... Rice University legacy player as father, Jose Cruz Jr. (1993-1995), and uncle, Enrique Cruz (2001-2003) both played for the Owls...
