2019: Started 57 of the team’s 59 games, including 54 at the physically demanding catcher’s spot… Started each of the team’s last 21 games behind the plate, and served as the only Owl backstop for the final 20 games – an ironman stretch of catching 181.0 consecutive innings to close out the year… Also made two starts at first base and one as the designated hitter… Usually batted in the 4-5-6 spots in the order (a combined 43 times)… Led the team, and ranked among the C-USA league leaders, with 41 walks… Finished second on the squad with four sac flies… Had 21 at bats with a runner on third base and less than two outs, and drove that teammate home 12 times (.571)… Blasted seven home runs, surpassing his total from his freshman season, to finish third on the team… Knocked a grand slam on the road at C-USA foe Charlotte (which was the first of two grand slams Rice hit in that same inning)… Tied for third on the team in doubles… Was fourth in slugging (.425) and on-base percentage (.387)… Hit safely in nine straight games during one stretch, tying for the longest by an Owl all season… Reached base at a .339 pace (20-of-59) when leading off an inning… Collected two or more hits in a game 15 times, including a career-high tying three hits (with a home run) against Rhode Island… Went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double to drive in three runs in the C-USA regular season series finale vs. Southern Miss… Registered a career-high six RBI in the grand slam game at Charlotte… Drove in two or more RBI in a game seven difference times, the fourth-highest total on the squad… Threw out 12 runners attempting to steal a base.
2018: Conference USA Academic Honor Roll; Worked his way into playing a major role in first season at the collegiate level, including tying for second on the team with six home runs... Played in 58 of the team's 59 games and with 55 starts as a true freshman… Made 40 starts at catcher and 15 as the designated hitter... Had a near-even split between catching and playing DH during the first month of the season, then had a stretch starting 19-of-21 consecutive games behind the plate during the middle of the year… Provided a win-win choice of playing him as the team's top-hitting catcher, or as the top-hitting DH (whose .281 DH-only average was the highest among any of the nine Owls who auditioned for the role)... Usually batted fifth or sixth in the order (38 times combined)… Twice batted clean-up, and delivered in that slugger-role with two home runs… Showed he was able to improve over the course of his debut season, batting at a .286 clip in the second half... Maintained a .301 average in C-USA league games, then was electric in the conference tournament going 6-for-15 (.400) with three walks and four runs scored in four games played... Reached base at a .420 pace (21-of-50) when leading off an inning... Collected two or more hits in a game 14 times... Tallied a career-high three hits on three occasions… Proved to be a ‘Night Owl,' batting a combined .296 with five home runs in 29 games after dark… Registered two or more RBI in game five times, including career-high four in a C-USA win over Old Dominion... Notched a career-best five total bases against west coast power Gonzaga... Worked well defensively with the Rice pitchers… Threw-out eleven runners attempting to steal a base.
