Honors at Rice
2021: Started 52 of 53 games at shortstop and posted the best numbers of his collegiate career… Hit .258 on the year (42x163), a 60 point jump over his career mark coming into the season and fielded at a .976 clip (3 errors in 126 chances) and 21 point improvement… Hit .302 in 31 conference games while striking out just seven times in 96 atat-batsOpened the year hitting just .211 through his first 29 games, closed on a .324 tear that began with an eight-game hitting streak that began in the second game of the day vs. LA Tech on 4/10… Collected three hits twice over four games at UAB (5/7 & 5/9)… Drove in four runs vs. Charlotte on 5/16 thanks to his first career grand slam to highlight a six-run first for the Owls… Committed only one error over his last 25 games and none in his last 12 (50 chances).
Prior to Rice- Transferred to Rice after starting 109 games for LSU over the past three seasons… Maintained a .955 career fielding percentage in 432 defensive chances playing shortstop, third and second... Started at shortstop on Opening Day for the Tigers in the abbreviated season of 2020… Named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll each of his first two collegiate seasons… Outstanding prep career in hometown of Norman, Oklahoma, earning USA Today First Team All-State… Helped lead Norman North HS to regional championships in 2016 and 2017… Member of the National Honor Society… Son of Pete Hughes, the head baseball coach at Kansas State (who has also served as head coach at Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma)… Both parents were Division I student-athletes at Davidson University
