Owls hold Harvard hitless into the ninth on their way to a 9-0 win
Houston- Ethan Sanders and three relievers combined to take a no-hitter into the ninth while the offense pile nine runs on 11 hits to down Harvard 9-0 on Sunday and complete a sweep of the three-game series on Sunday at Reckling Park. Rice evened its record at 6-6 while Harvard fell to 0-6.
How it Happened: Sanders picked up where he left off in his start last Sunday at USC setting down the first 11 Crimson hitters in order, extending his streak to 25 batters in order before he issued a two-out walk in the fourth. He left after walking the leadoff hitting in the sixth due to cramping, and Tanner Wiggins settled down after walking his first hitter to strike out the next three to end the Crimson's lone offensive threat in the game. Ty Baker took over in the eight and retired the side in his Rice debut and Carson Kuhn finished the game, giving up a single with one out in the ninth before retiring the final two hitters to close out the Owls first shutout win since a 2-0 win over Charlotte last May. Rice provided Sanders and staff all the runs they would need by scoring two in the firs. Colin Robson led off the game with a four-pitch walk, moved to second on a single by JC Davis and on a bunt single and error. Kutter-Gage Webb closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly which scored Davis. Robson's double in the second scored Masa Chilcutt, who was making his first career start. Rice added two in the fifth to build some breathing room and then added four in the seventh, highlighted by Jacob Devennyt's pinch-hit, two-run single.
Next Up: Rice hit the road for its next nine games, including midweek games Lamar on Tuesday and Houston on March 10, and weekend series at Abilene Christian (three games) from March 6-8 and a four-game set of games in Phoenix, Arizona featuring two with Grand Canyon and Saint Mary's from March 13-15. The Owls come home to Reckling on March 17 for the first of two midweek matchups with UTRGV.
