Travel to Abilene to face ACU this weekend
Beaumont- Paul Smith doubled home a pair of runs, and four Rice pitchers combined to hold Lamar to one run as Rice won for the first time on the road this year, downing the Cardinals 4-1 at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Wednesday night.
How it Happened: Lamar needed only two batters to score what turned out to be its only run in the bottom of the first, but starter Jeremiah Arnett and relievers Marco Fuentes, Anthony Diaz, and Ty Thames held the Cardinals off the scoreboard the rest of the game. Rice took the lead at the top of the third when Masa Chilcutt opened the inning with a walk, and Colin Robson followed with a bunt single. Both moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Smith's double to centerfield. Lamar threatened multiple times, Rice's mound staff held them to a 0-11 night with runners in scoring position. Rice added two insurance runs in the eighth when JC Davis hit a sacrifice fly to score Hiram Bocachica Jr. and Zachary Daigre followed him home on a throwing error.
Next Up: The Owls literally hit the road on Thursday for a bus trip toar on Abilene in advance of a three-game series against Abilene Christian this weekend. The series opens at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 3 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday.
