HOUSTON — Grace Collins assisted on all five goals, setting a new school record and tying the Conference USA record while goalkeeper Bella Killgore set the school record for saves in a 5-2 victory over Incarnate Word, Sunday night from Holloway Field.
The Details
The Owls started off strong as Mikala Furuto put in Collins' rebound for the opening goal in the fifth minute. Furuto wasted no time getting the brace as just over a minute later, she took a pass from Collins, deked the goalkeeper, and put the ball into an open net. In the 12th minute, UIW got on the board on a goal by Keeley Ayala, who tied the game eight minutes later. But Rice jumped back in front when Collins' corner kick was headed in by Madi Allen. The Owls regained its two-goal advantage in the 28th minute. Collins hit a streaking Madison Kent down the middle, and Kent fired the ball from just inside the box past the keeper, as Rice went into halftime with a 4-2 lead. The second half started off slow. In the 58th minute, Furuto made a bid for the hat trick took Collins' cross-field pass, and back-footed it off the right post. But in the 68th minute, Collins again found Kent, who fired one off the crossbar. But Mariana Elizondo was right there to head in the rebound and push Rice's lead to 5-2. Rice kept the pressure on, forcing UIW's Margaret Kofron to keep making saves, but could scratch another across.
What Brian Lee Had to Say
"I thought our performance was better obviously, especially attacking-wise. It's been a tough start to the season, but we've played well enough to have results. We asked (the team) to have a response tonight. What would the first 10-15 minutes of the game look like? I thought they really took it to heart. From the get-go, they were pretty sharp."
Up Next
Rice closes its homestand this Thursday, September 1 when it hosts crosstown rival Houston Baptist. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on CUSAtv.
