HOUSTON — Madison Kent's goal in the 29th minute was the difference and Bella Killgore earned her first shutout of the season as Rice defeated Houston Baptist, 1-0, Thursday night from Holloway Field.
The Details
Rice came close to grabbing an early lead when, in the third minute, Shiloh Miller sent a cross to the front of the net that Mikala Furuto kicked toward an open cage. However, an HBU defender was able to knock it away just before it crossed the goal line. The teams traded possessions in each other's zone, but neither could get off a quality chance. But in the 29th minute, the Owls broke through when Grace Collins' corner kick went straight to the front of the net where Madison Kent leaped up and headed the ball for the 1-0 lead. Jules Johnston had a chance in the 35th minute, but Chloe Bagshaw made the save to keep it a one-goal game at the half. Rice controlled play through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Madi Allen and Collins both got shots off in close, but Bagshaw made the save each time. Bella Killgore then had a shot after a Houston Baptist foul, but it sailed high. HBU started to apply pressure in the offensive zone, but Rice kept them at bay, only allowing two shots on net. Rice then bled the clock to secure the victory.
What Brian Lee Had to Say
"That was another good corner goal for us. It was a great serve by Grace (Collins). Madison (Kent) is quite athletic and did a great job of getting her head on it and close to frame. Overall, it's still early. We're rotating so much. It's good to see some new kids playing. I thought Naija (Bruckner) had a good 45-minute run. It's good to see people stepping forward as well.
