HOUSTON — Rice battled hard throughout, but two second half goals by Houston in an eight-minute span gave it a 3-1 victory, Sunday night from the Carl Lewis International Complex.
The Details
Rice got an early scoring chance 30 seconds in when Mikala Furuto fed Grace Collins for a shot from the right side, but UH goalkeeper Haley Woodward made the save. Following a Houston foul, Bella Killgore's free kick in the 17th minute went just over the crossbar. The teams back-and-forth, but in the 34th minute, Houston broke the tie when Cordelia Cross' shot sailed into the top right corner. But the Owls immediately came on the attack. Off of Killgore's free kick, Collins' header hit the crossbar. Mikala Furuto's rebound was stopped before Delaney Schultz's attempt went just wide. Schultz had two more cracks at it, but couldn't find the net. But with 15 seconds remaining in the half, Collins was brought down in the box, awarding Rice a penalty kick. Killgore fired it into the right side of the net to tie match at one heading into the half.
Schultz just missed giving Rice the lead in the 51st minute when her shot from outside the box hit the bottom of the crossbar and Woodward corralled it before it could cross the line. However, three minutes later, UH grabbed the advantage when Nadia Kamassah shot bounced off the hands of a diving Killgore and went into the net. Houston pushed its lead to 3-1 eight minutes later when Samantha Wiehe's corner kick connected with Emma Clarke, who knocked it in. The Owls tried to push the play in an attempt to tie the game, but they were not able to get anything close.
