San Marcos, Texas — Avery Thies' goal in the 85th minute snapped a 1-1 tie as Rice dropped a heartbreaker at Texas State, 2-1, Thursday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Details
The game was a defensive affair for most of the first half. After a Texas State shot, Grace Collins and Delaney Schultz both put shots on goal. With 15 minutes to play in the half, the Owls began to apply pressure. Killgore's free kick sailed just over the crossbar, followed by Collins sending a shot toward the right corner, but Bobcat keeper Katelyn Chrisman was there for the save. But in the 38th minute, Rice finally broke through. Jessica Molina picked up a loose ball and fed Collins in the middle where she fired a shot into the top left corner for the 1-0 lead. The Owls had one more chance before the half, but Naija Bruckner's shot in close was saved, and Rice went into the break with the lead.
Rice opened the second half with a pair of scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. Schultz had a shot from in close, but it sailed high. Serena Pham then sent a shot toward the top of the net, but Chrisman made a leaping save. But in the 57th minute, the Bobcats were awarded a corner kick. Her attempts sailed toward the front of the net where it went off Carolina Kirshner straight to Madi Goss, who put it into the back of the net to tie the score. Just over a minute later, Texas State thought it took the lead, but was called for offside. After the teams battled, Texas State got a late goal in the 85th minute when, following a corner kick, the ball bounced around in front of the net before Thies sent it into the left side for the lead. Rice had one more shot with two minutes to play when Kallie McKinney send a shot high in the air. But it bounced off the top of the crossbar.
