FAU in for three games starting Friday at 6:30
The Details: The Islanders appeared to break open a 7-7 seesaw affair with five runs in the eighth and took a 12-7 lead into the ninth, before the Owls plated three runs on four consecutive hits with one out. Jack Riedel collected a pinch hit single and Drew Woodcox followed with a pinch hit double to drive in Riedel and Pierce Gallo, who had opened the inning with a walk. Antonio Cruz followed with his second double of the game on ball that hit the top of the fence but stayed in the park. Guy Garibay blooped a single to right that only allowed Cruz to advance to third and Austin Bulman followed with a walk to load the bases. But Islanders reliever JT Moeller coaxed a ground ball out of Aaron Smigelski to end the game.
Notable:
- The win was the first for the Islanders in the 21 games of the series.
- The Owls' three-run innings in the sixth and ninth give them 16 innings in which they have scored three or more runs over the last 10 games after having only six such innings in the first 16 games.
- Becker has reached base in a career-high 21 consecutive games, the longest by an Owl since Ryan Chandler reached in the final 23 games of the 2018 season.
- Gallo has now driven in 15 runs in his last 11 games.
- Riedel and Woodcox's pinch hits in the ninth increased the Owls season total to 11, their most since they had 19 in 2007.
- Antonio Cruz's two doubles were a career-high and he matched his career best with three RBI.
- Johnny Hoyle extended his hitting streak to a career-best eight games.
- Hal Hughes made his first appearance of the year after returning from a preseason injury and drove in a run with a single in his first at bat of the year.
- Brandon Deskins worked 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, the longest outing by a Rice reliever this year.
