Owls Host International Friendly At Holloway Field
The Rice Soccer team will host the Costa Rica National Team in an exhibition match on January 24, 2020 at the Owls' Holloway Field, Rice head coach Brian Lee announced on Friday (Jan. 10).
The start of the exhibition is scheduled for 6 pm. Tickets, starting as low as $8, may be purchased online at the above link.
The Costa Rica National Team will be in Houston for the 2020 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying matches later this month, where trip to the Summer Olympics in Japan will be on the line. Costa Rica is in the qualifier's A Group along with the national teams from Haiti, Panama and the United States.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Rice student-athletes, getting a chance to compete against an international team that could very well be playing in the Olympic Games later this summer," said coach Lee. "The exhibition is right at the very start of our offseason training program, but we welcome this unique challenge. Having the match in front of our fans at Holloway Field will add extra level of excitement for our team."
The Rice soccer program has played international exhibition matches before. The Owls played two different professional women's teams while on an international tour of Spain in March 2018. The Owls went 1-1 in overseas exhibitions against RCD Espanyol Femeni and CCF Maritim, respectively.
