MIAMI, Fla. – A total of four different Owls scored a season-high goals to pace the Rice soccer team to a convincing 4-0 Conference USA road victory at FIU Friday night at the Golden Panthers Soccer Complex in Miami, Fla.
Rice Remains Only Unbeaten Team In C-USA Action
Rice remained unbeaten in C-USA matches (6-0-2) and earned another three points in the league standings. The Owls now have 20 points in C-USA games to hold sole possession of second place overall, a single point behind first place Charlotte (7-1-0, 21 points). Rice is the only unbeaten team in the conference and improved to 9-4-2 for the full season. FIU is 2-13 overall and 0-8-0 in C-USA.
C-USA Postseason Spot Secured
The Owls have mathematically clinched a spot in the upcoming C-USA Championship tournament. The league's postseason clash, where an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship is on the line, is scheduled for Nov. 6-10 in Denton, Texas. The final seeding of the single-elimination tournament is yet to be finalized.
Goal Avalanche
Four different Owls contributed to the team's highest goal output of the season. Senior forward Louise Stephens quickly opened the scoring in the fifth minute of action with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Rice was right back on the offensive with a goal by sophomore Delaney Schultz in the eighth minute. The Blue & Gray stretched the margin to 3-0 in the 35th minute with the first collegiate goal by true freshman Shiloh Miller. Sophomore Madison Kent came off the bench to play a season-high 62 minutes and added Rice's fourth goal of the night in the 82nd minute.
Early Birds
Rice entered Friday's match having scored a total of just four goals in the first half all season long. The team then erupted for three first-half goals against the Golden Panthers.
With The Assist…
Senior Lianne Mananquil assisted on both of Rice's first two goals. The midfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., had a big contingent of family and friends to watch her play in her home state. Mananquil leads the team with five assists. Owl goals-leader Louise Stephens notched her first assist of the year on Kent's goal.
Clean Slate No. 7
The Owl goalkeeping tandem of sophomore Bella Killgore and senior Maya Hoyer split Friday's playing time for the first and second halves, respectively. The duo combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season. The seven clean slates is the eighth-highest single-season total in program history.
Coach Lee Said
"The match was a good night in a lot of way for the Owls," said Rice head coach Brian Lee. "Four different goal scorers and positive performances from a bunch of players."
