KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Two of the stars of Rice's soccer team, junior midfielder Shelley Wong and junior forward Erin Scott were named all-Central Region honorees by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA), the organization announced from its headquarters in Kansas City, Kan. Wong was named to the NSCAA's central region second team while Scott was named to the third team.
Wong, a Virginia Beach, Va., native who was recently named the Owls' player of the year, scored a team-best nine goals to rank among the Conference USA statistical leaders. She scored two more goals in a game three times and registered two game-winning goals. Wong maintained a .487 shots-on-goal percentage for the entire season and .545 percentage against the league. In addition to playing 93.6 percent of the team's C-USA minutes, the quick midfielder earned two C-USA Player of the Week awards and was named to the Academic All-District VI team.
Scott scored seven goals and registered six assists for an Owl team that posted its sixth-straight winning season. The Richardson, Tex., standout scored a total of three game-winning goals, led the team in shots (51) and maintained a team-best .588 shots-on-goal percentage. Scott also had equal success in the classroom. She was recently named to the NCAA Academic All-America Third Team after maintaining a 4.00 grade point average as a psychology major in Rice's accelerated curriculum.
Rice soccer may be a young program, but the Blue & Gray has a sizeable resume of individual award winners. Ten Owls have earned 12 all-region honors since the program started in 2001.
