HOUSTON -- Rice freshman Kate Edwards blasted home a penalty kick in the 102nd minute for the lone goal of the game and freshman goalkeeper Meghan Erkel made the 1-0 margin stand up with a complete game shut out victory as the Owls' soccer team defeated state rival TCU in double-overtime Friday evening at the Rice Soccer Complex.
Edwards converted on a penalty kick attempt for the second time in as many games to help the Owls remain unbeaten in the early season at 2-0-1. Early in the second OT, Rice senior Caitlin Robbins won a 50-50 ball and found Clory Martin, who passed to Erin Scott on the wing. Scott got rid of the ball as the defense converged around her, and played to Shelley Wong who had an open look at the goal.
The Horned Frogs had no choice but aggressively contain the threat with a tackle near the keeper's box. The Owls elected to return to the same successful PK attempt from the game before with Edwards on the ball. She found the back of the net on the penalty kick. The goal was Edwards' second of the season after she made a PK against Dartmouth one week ago.
"We felt very comfortable knowing that Kate's very composed and confident on the ball, and put her on for the attempt," Rice head coach Chris Huston said. "She did a great job on the PK, but I think our defensive effort won us the game tonight. We were organized defensively. We may have struggled offensively, but I think the girls played well. There's definitely another level within them that we need to reach."
TCU outshot Rice for the game 19-18, but the Blue & Gray continued to apply the offensive pressure and held a 3-1 shots advantage in the two overtime periods. Rice freshman goalkeeper Meghan Erkel was up to the challenge with a career-high nine saves. The nine Owl saves tied for the fifth-highest mark in school history.
"We've had three games and two have gone to double-overtime," Edwards said. "We need to finish these games in 90 minutes. We know if we play hard all 90 minutes, then we won't have to play any more than that. We're right there. We don't need to wait over overtime."
Rice, undefeated at 2-0-1, next plays Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. Start time against the Lady Jacks is 1 pm at the Rice Soccer Stadium.
