DENTON - The Rice soccer team took more shots and controlled the tempo for most of the 90 minutes, but the University of North Texas claimed a 1-0 home win over the visiting Owls Friday evening at the Mean Green Soccer complex in Denton.
Rice held a 16-10 advantage in shots but could not convert the chances into scores. A Rice miscue in the first half led to the only goal of the game and Owls fell to 4-3 on the season with their second loss in a row.
In the 28th minute the Rice defense failed to clear out a ball at the top of the 18 yard line. The ball was bounding free when Mean Green junior midfielder Kristen Campbell opportunistically charged in and took a shot from 15 yards in front of the goal. The attempt found the mark high in the left corner in what would prove to be the game-winner.
The Owls came back with nine more shots in the second half but only three needed to be corralled by the North Texas keeper. One of the Blue and Gray's best chances was midway through the period when three shots in a row were turned away, two on a back-to-back sequence. In the 72nd minute freshman Anne Candee's attempt was deflected away and a follow-up by junior Vanessa Serrano was saved. In the 86th minute a corner kick to Beth Martin was high and with 30 seconds left Candee was just wide.
North Texas improved to 5-2-1 on the season. The Owls next face Texas on the road in Austin on Sept. 18. Start time against the 21st-ranked Lady Longhorns is slated for 7:30 pm.
