CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rice scored in five of the first six innings on its way to 6-2 win over Charlotte, to take the series, Saturday afternoon.
Rice improves to 22-14 on the year, moving eight games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2016 season when it finished 38-24.
Rice took the lead in the second inning. After Landis Davila drew a two-out walk, Cole Green doubled down the left field line, allowing Davila to score from first. Colin Robson then hit a three-hopper up the middle, scoring Green for the early 2-0 lead. Charlotte threatened in the bottom half, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Todd Hudson followed with a long fly ball to left field. But Jacob Devenny brought it back, robbing him of a three-run home run and keeping the lead for the Owls.
Rice added another in the third. With one out, Hiram Bocachica, Jr., singled, and Kutter-Gage Webb doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Devenny then dropped a bloop single in front of the left fielder to score Bocachica.
Colin Robson led off the fourth with a single. Three batters later, Bocachica singled up the middle to bring him in. An inning later, Lorenzo Rios reached on an error. Davila then went the other way, singling him in. The 49ers threatened in the bottom half, getting two straight singles to put runners at the corners to start the inning. But Ethan Sanders got a lineout, then struck out the last two batters to get out of the inning.
Charlotte got on the board in the sixth on a two-run home run by Robert Nedry. But, Ty Thames came on in the seventh and got the final nine outs for the save.
Ethan Sanders struck out six in six strong to earn the win (2-4). Thames earned his third save of the year. Joseph Taylor (4-4) took the loss.
With the win, Rice improved to 10-8 away from Reckling Park, joining UTSA as the only American Conference teams better than .500 away from home.
