Rice Earns Series Sweep at Charlotte
4/12/2026 3:26:00 PM | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — JC Davis' RBI single in the fifth inning was the difference, and the Owls' pitching held Charlotte to just four hits, as they defeated the 49ers, 3-2, Sunday afternoon to earn their first conference sweep since 2024.
Rice improved to 23-14, moving nine games over .500 for the first time since the end of 2016.
Rice wasted no time in the first, loading the bases with no outs. Paul Smith got the Owls on the board with a single to score two. However, Kutter-Gage Webb and Jacob Devenny struck out, and Lorenzo Rios grounded out to end the threat.
Charlotte tied the game in the third. Walker Morgan and Aaron Orozco hit back-to-back singles, and Spencer Nolan and Todd Hudson drew walks to score the first run. Cody Gunderson then tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Owls retook the lead in the fifth. After Colin Robson singled to lead off the inning, he moved to second on a balk, then third on a wild pitch. JC Davis took advantage of the free bases, lining a single into left, scoring Robson.
The 49ers threatened in the eighth, putting two runners on with one out. But Brayden Sharp came on and got Hudson and Grunderson to strikeout, preserving the lead.
After Sharp gave up a single to lead off the ninth, Ty Thames came on and got the final two outs.
Ryland Urbanczyk struck out four in a career-long seven innings to earn the win (3-2). Thames earned his team-high fourth save of the year. Chase Carson (2-2) took the loss.
