Six Owls to compete for berths at Indoor Nationals
Waco: Rice will send six players to the courts at the 2023 ITA Texas D1 Women's Regional, which opens play at the Hurd Tennis Center on Thursday.
Draws
The Details: Anushka Ashar, Chie Kezuka, Saara Orav, Divna Ratkovic, Darya Schwartzman, and Federica Trevisan will compete in singles, while the Owls doubles pairings will be Trevisan and Kezuka, Ashar and Orav, and Ratkovic and Schwartzman. The singles and doubles winners will advance to the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego, California. Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang were the last Owls to capture a Texas Regional title, capturing the doubles title in 2017. Kezuka advanced to the ITA Nationals in doubles last year while playing at Iowa State. This weekend's action will be the Owls' first in tournament play this fall after competing in a pair of hidden dual events and it will also be their first completion this fall outside the city limits of Houston.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "I'm excited to really see where our players are at this point in the season against some other formidable competition in our region. Texas might be one of the toughest, if not the toughest regions to come through to get to nationals. Because everyone is playing for a spot at nationals, there is definitely a different buzz compared to our other fall events. While Chie obviously came here with a ton of experience (playing at Iowa State), I've been really pleased with how Anushka and Divna have made the adjustments to college tennis and I feel that our team has really started gel. Even though this is a tournament with no team scoring, being together away from home is great for building our team's chemistry and culture.
Up Next: Rice will close out the fall season by hosting the Rice Invitational, November 3-5 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
