Next Up: Rice Invitational Nov. 3-5
Waco: Chie Kezuka and Federica Trevisan captured the consolation doubles title while Darya Schwartzman's run in the consolation singles ended in a hard-fought semifinal battle to close out action for Rice at the 2023 ITA Women's Texas Regional at the Hurd Tennis Center on Sunday.
Details: Kezuka and Trevisan earned a spot in the consolation doubles final by opening play on Sunday morning with an 8-3 win over Texas Tech's Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Andreea Lila. They were named champions when their opponent in Monday's final, Vivian Ovrootsky and Malaika Rapolu of Texas withdrew because of an injury. Schwartzman moved into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over SMU's Maya Makoric. Facing Texas A&M's Gianna Pielet, who was seeded eighth in the main draw when play opened, Schwartzman shook off a 5-0 loss in a first set tiebreaker to storm back and take the second set 6-0 to force a deciding superset tiebreaker. The two battled back and forth before Pielet took the match with an 11-9 win.
