HOUSTON – The No. 57 Rice women's tennis team defeated Florida International 4-1 on Sunday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Owls improved to 13-6 overall and 8-1 at home this season.
Rice secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. On court two, Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova opened the day with a 6-1 win over Vittoria Baccino and Maria Araoz-Gosn. FIU evened things up when Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte fell 6-3 to Katerina Madnelikova and Viktorie Hazmukova on court one. Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Aleksandra Simeva and Maria Araoz-Gosn on court three.
Mravocova was the first to finish in singles play, defeating Hazmukova 6-4, 6-0. FIU got on the board when Chica fell 6-2, 6-1 to Simeva.
Ratkovic extended the Owls' lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Baccino on court two before Nithesa Selvaraj clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Araoz-Gosn.
When play was halted, Schwartzman was in the third set on court one (3-6, 6-2, 3-4), while Maguina led 6-4, 5-6 on court three.
Rice will close the regular season April 13 against UAB at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
