Owls Defeat UAB to Close Regular Season

HOUSTON – The Rice women's tennis team closed the regular season with a 4-0 win over UAB on Monday morning.
The No. 54 Rice Owls finish the regular season with a 14-6 overall record and a 7-2 mark in conference play.
In doubles, Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova defeated Nera Tesankic and Gresi Bajri, 6-1. Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Julia Caffarena and Antonia Ende on Court 3. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez led 5-3 on Court 1 when play was halted.
In singles, Schwartzman earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kristyna Damaskova. Mravcova followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 5. Daniela Chica clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Tesankic.
On the remaining courts, Ratkovic was headed to a third set after splitting the first two, 6-4, 3-6. Nithesa Selvaraj trailed 6-7, 1-1 on Court 4, while Anushka Ashar had just taken a 7-6 lead on Court 6.
The Owls will face either No. 6 seed North Texas or No. 11 seed Memphis on Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m. CT in the American Conference tournament at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
