No. 3 Rice Advances to Semifinals With 4-1 Win Over No. 6 North Texas

HOUSTON – The No. 3-seeded Rice women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the American Conference Championship with a 4-1 win over No. 6 seed North Texas on Friday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The No. 51 Owls (15-6) opened tournament play in the quarterfinals and secured the doubles point to take early control.
Divna Ratkovic and Daniela Chica set the tone with a 6-0 win over Carolina Laydner and Pia Petelinsek. Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova clinched the point on Court 2 with a 7-5 victory against Marina Adati and Ujin Batsukh. Darya Schwartzman and Uma Bakaityte were tied 5-5 on Court 1 when play was halted.
Rice carried the momentum into singles, winning three of the first four completed matches. Maguina earned the first singles point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Adati on Court 3. North Texas got on the board when Fernanda Martinez fell 6-2, 6-3 to Giuliana Ciangherotti. Ratkovic responded with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Lou Chalard to give Rice a 3-1 lead.
Mravcova sealed the match on Court 5, defeating Petelinsek 7-6, 6-0. After taking the first-set tiebreak, she won seven consecutive games to close out the match.
When play was halted, Schwartzman was tied 2-2 in the second set after dropping the first 7-6 to Laydner on Court 1. On Court 4, Nithesa Selvaraj led 5-1 in the second set after falling 7-5 in the first.
Rice will face No. 2 seed Charlotte in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Owls fell 4-1 to Charlotte earlier this season.
