Early Strike Lifts Roadrunners

Game Two set for 2 p.m. Saturday
Reckling Park: UTSA jumped on Rice for six runs in the first four innings and never looked back, downing the Owls 9-2 in the series opener at Reckling Park on Friday night.
The Details: The Roadrunners failed to score in the top of the first, but piled up a hefty pitch count on Rice starter Cooper Chandler during the 20-minute opening frame and then struck quickly in the second for four runs, three on a home run by Jonathan Tapia. After UTSA added a fifth run in the third, Rice mounted a charge in the bottom of the inning. Guy Garibay's doubled home Hal Hughes and Jack Ben-Shoshan with one out to cut the margin to 5-2, but UTSA starter Luke Malone recovered to retire the final two hitters and end the threat. Trailing 7-2 in the eighth, the Owls offered one final challenge by loading the bases with two outs to put the tying run on deck, but Roadrunner reliever Braylon Owens escaped to preserve the lead.
Notable:
- Garibay collected three hits, his fourth three-hit game this year.
- Chandler's streak of four consecutive starts of six innings came to an end (3.1,6,6,6,2,5).
- Garrett Zaskoda worked a team-best 3.2 innings in relief of Chandler, the second-longest relief outing of his career (4.0 vs. HBU last year).
- Jack Ben-Shoshan posted his first career multi-hit game, finishing 2x4. His single in the third inning broke an 0x22 stretch after he singled in his first career at-bat at Texas on 2/19.
- Nathan Becker singled in four trips to the plate, extending his streak of reaching base in all of his 25 starts this year… Overall he has reached base in 28 of his last 29 games, with the streak ending with a pinch-hit appearance.
- Jack Riedel saw his career-best hitting streak stopped at nine games.
