Choudrant, La. — Junior Forrest Park carded a first round 73 to lead the Rice Golf team during the first round of the season-opening Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club.
Park is tied for 41st-place. As a team, the Owls are in 18th-place at 13-over par.
Junior Thomas Bockholt III and redshirt freshman Blake Benson, playing in his first collegiate tournament, are tied for 54th-place after each posted a 74.
Freshman Raghav Chugh, also playing in his first collegiate tournament, and senior Jake Benson both shot a 77 to sit in a tie for 88th-place and senior Jack Diamond carded an opening 79, tying for 101st-place.
Houston leads the team competition at four-under par, one shot in front of second-place Little Rock, LSU and Southern Miss. Lamar's Kevin Lee leads the individual competition at five-under par, one stroke in front of LSU's Drew Doyle and Sam Murphy of Louisiana Tech.

"It's not the way we wanted to come out of the gates this fall, but we were real close to playing well during a lot of the round. Squire Creek Country Club is a real good challenge for us this week. I just want us to learn and grow from each round that we play this year. We have a great group of young men who want it bad. I'm proud to see Forrest (Park) play a clean round today, finishing with a birdie on the last hole. He kept the ball in front of him all day. Thomas (Bockholt III) played pretty solid despite being a little uncomfortable over a few shots. His speed control on the greens was really honed in and that made a big difference. These greens are lightning fast. It's also good to see Blake (Benson) play well in his first college round. We have a few things to clean up tomorrow. We're sticking with the process and growing each day."
