Men’s Golf Tied for Fifth at NCAA Athens Regional

Athens, Ga. — The Rice Men's Golf team fired its best round in NCAA Regional history to open the NCAA Athens Regional, played at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
The Owls carded a first round 279, tied for fifth at -5 with No. 26 Georgia, one stroke behind No. 24 BYU. No. 36 Louisville holds the team lead at -10, three strokes in front of No. 1 Auburn and No. 13 Vanderbilt.
It was their 22nd round of par or better this year.
Senior Lukas Boandl leads the Owls in an eighth-place tie at -3 after firing a 68. Boandl birdied the 12th before giving it back on the 15th. He then birdied the 18th to make the turn at -1. Boandl began his second nine with six straight pars. He recorded back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth, and closed his round with a par on the ninth.
The 68 tied the second best round by an individual in NCAA Regionals in school history. It was his 14th round in the 60's this year, and the 28th of his career. He also set a single-season school record with his 24th round of par or better this season, and the 62nd of his career.
Freshman Raines Watson and sophomore Daniel Zou both carded a one-under 70 to sit in a tie for 17th-place. It was Watson's 14th round of par or better this year, and Zou's 20th. It was also the 41st of his career.
Junior Reggie Zhu is tied for 29th-place at even par, carding a 71, the 14th round of par or better this year and the 33rd of his career. Redshirt junior Henry Daly posted a three-over 74 to sit in a 52nd-place tie.
Auburn's Josiah Gilbert leads the individual competition at -6, one stroke in front of Louisville's Warren Thomis and Northwestern's Ethan Tseng.

"The guys handled themselves really well out there today. We needed something in the red to get it going over here and they were pretty solid out there. They battled through a difficult second nine that challenged everyone."

The second round begins tomorrow at 7 a.m. CT. Rice will tee off at 7:30 from hole No. 10 and will be paired with student-athletes from BYU and Georgia.
