Houston, Texas — The Rice Men's Golf team held off a hard-charging Sam Houston squad to repeat as Bayou City Collegiate Classic champions, played at the par-72, 7,184-yard Westwood Golf Club.

The Owls, who entered the day in second place, closed the second round with a one-under 287 and followed it with a four-under 284 to finish at -14, two strokes in front of Sam Houston.

Redshirt senior Davis Byrd had the best tournament of his career, tying for third-place after closing with a 69-70. It was his first career top-five finish, and he set career-lows for 36-hole (138) and 54-hole score (208). He has four rounds of par or better this year and 11 in his career.

Redshirt senior Henry Daly closed with consecutive 72's to finish -3 in a tie for 11^th-place. He now has five rounds of par or better this season and 29 in his career. It is also his second top 20 finish this year and the ninth of his career.

Senior Reggie Zhu tied for 16^th-place at +2 after closing with 74-70. The 70 was his fourth round of par or better and 38^th in his career, and he has two top 20 finishes this season and 10 in his career.

Junior Nolan Kuszyk posted a 73-72 to tie for 23^rd-place at +1. The 72 was Kuszyk's second round or par or better this year, and the 26^th of his career.

Sophomore Raines Watson tied for 26^th-place at +2 closing with a 73-74.

Senior Jaivir Pande tied for 11^th-place at -3 to lead a group of golfers playing as individuals. He carded a 74-71 to close the tournament. The 71 is his second round of par or better this year and the 13^th in his career. It is also his fourth top-20 finish in his career.

Junior William Johnson carded a 74, then fired the best round of his career, closing with a 70 to finish at +4 in a tie for 36^th-place. The 70 is his third career round of par or better.

Freshman Alex Kerins finished his first career tournament in a tie for 60^th-place at +9 after closing with 77-76, and senior Braeden Hoyt went 77-86 to finish at +27 in 85^th-place.

Texas' Sterling Hurd and Middle Tennessee's Connor Henry shared medalist honors at -10.

"I'm really proud of our team this week, getting the win at our home tournament. Davis (Byrd) carried us across the finish line, playing some really clean golf on a tough setup. He's really hitting a nice stride these last two weeks. The guys just works so hard and it's nice to see that paying off. We didn't have our best stuff this week, but the guys were resilient and fought hard for the win.

We are so very grateful for our partnership with Westwood Golf Club. Their staff did an amazing job with the course, food, and the many other tournament tasks. Thanks also to the members for giving up the course for three days. It's an amazing golf course. Finally, our assistant coach Jake Croshaw worked tirelessly this week and he deserves a bunch of credit for a successful event."

The Owls will take two weeks off before heading to Dallas for the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 4-6.
