Men’s Golf Has Record Setting Day to Close NCAA Athens Regional

Athens, Ga. — The Rice Men's Golf closed its season in record setting fashion at the NCAA Athens Regional, played at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
The Owls fired a school record 269, the best round of the day at 15-under par, to finish in 10th-place at -8. The 15-under tied the second-best round to par in school history.
Sophomore Daniel Zou and senior Lukas Boandl tied for 19th-place at -4. Zou fired a bogey-free 66, while Boandl carded a 67.
Zou opened his day with five straight pars on the back nine before a birdie on the 15th hole. He then parred five straight. Zou birdied the third hole, and following a par on the fourth, recorded three straight birdies on holes 5-7 before closing with consecutive pars.
The 66 was his eighth round in the 60's this year and the 17th of his career. It was also his 21st round of par or better this year and the 42nd of his career.
Boandl's 67 was his 15th round in the 60's this year and the 29th of his career. It was also his 25th round of par or better this year and the 63rd of his career.
Junior Reggie Zhu led the Owls with a six-under 65, a career-best and the best round in Rice NCAA history, to tie for 28th-place at -2. He began the day with birdies on 11 and 12 before giving them back with a double-bogey on the 13th. Zou came right back with a birdie on the 15th, then eagled the 17th to make the turn at -3. He bogeyed the first to begin the second nine, but birdied four of the next six holes before closing with consecutive pars.
He 65 was his fourth round in the 60's this year and the ninth of his career. It was also his 15th round of par or better this season and the 34th of his career.
Freshman Raines Watson and redshirt junior Henry Daly each carded even par 71's. Watson tied for 49th-place at +3, while Daly finished at +6 in a tie for 60th-place. It was Watson's 14th round of par or better this year, and Daly's 17th this year and 24th of his career.
No. 13 Vanderbilt won the team competition at -28, two strokes in front of No. 36 Louisville.
